SELF-DEFENSE ACT INSTRUCTOR

 

The Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training, in support of the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act, 
creates the criteria for becoming a Concealed Weapons Instructor and validates that an instructor 
has met the requirements necessary to become an instructor for the purpose of teaching classes 
required to obtain a concealed handgun license. 

CLEET does not issue the Concealed Weapon License or the Concealed Weapon Instructor License.

CLEET has statutory requirement to create the criteria for which must be met before being licensed as a firearms instructor pursuant to the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act.

Statute 21 O.S. 1290.14

B. The Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET) shall establish criteria for approving firearms instructors and interactive online firearms safety and training courses available electronically via the Internet for purposes of training and qualifying individuals for a handgun license pursuant to the provisions of the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act. Prior to submitting an application for CLEET approval as a firearms instructor, applicants shall attend a firearms instructor school, meeting the following minimum requirements:

1. Firearms instructor training conducted by one of the following entities:

a. Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training,

b. National Rifle Association,

c. Oklahoma Rifle Association,

d. federal law enforcement agencies, or

e. other professionally recognized organizations;

2. The course shall be at least sixteen (16) hours in length;

3. Upon completion of the course, the applicant shall be qualified to provide instruction on revolvers, semiautomatic pistols, or both; and

4. Receive a course completion certificate.

Q. What type of training do I need?
A. Firearms instructor training conducted by one of the following
a) CLEET
b) National Rifle Association
c) Federal law enforcement agencies
d) Other professional recognized organizations (as deemed by CLEET)
2)Course shall be at least sixteen (16) in length

 Q. How long does it take to get 
my certificate once CLEET receives all the necessary materials?

A. As long as the application is complete, it takes 10-14 business days for the completed certificate and curriculum to arrive.
